Geolocation Feature Added to US Bank Credit Cards

[Thursday, October 20th, 2016]

Everyone with a credit card and a love for travel has probably had the experience of having their card suddenly stop working while they’re on vacation, because it was frozen by the fraud prevention department of their card issuer. At the very least, you’ve gotten a call asking if a charge was legitimate, because the purchase was made far from home.

But now US Bank is offering consumers a new technology designed to keep this from happening: geolocation. This service lets cardholders opt-in to a feature that matches their mobile phone’s location to the place where a transaction originates. In other words, if you’ve got your phone on you when you’re buying dinner in another state or country far from home, US Bank will know that the charge is actually coming from you, and they won’t freeze your card or call to ask if it’s really you.

The technology is meant to minimize disruption to customers’ lives and further reduce the risk of fraud.

Not all cards eligible for new feature – yet

The initial geolocation perk will be available to US Bank co-branded cards and other financial partners. US Bank FlexPerks Visa credit cards are eligible for geolocation; cardholders have only to opt-in via mobile phone, using the FlexPerks app. As long as your phone is one when you are making a purchase away from home, US Bank will be able to tell where you are and match your location to the point of purchase.

Senior vice president at US Bank, Clifford Cook, said the technology would help avoid “customer frustration.” And US Bank executive vice president Dominic Venturo said the new feature “is an example of the focus US Bank has on enhancing the customer experience for our customers.”

US Bank offers a variety of credit cards, from co-branded cards to low-APR credit cards to rewards credit cards. While not all of them will have the geolocation feature immediately, they may eventually offer it. In the meantime, their selection of rewards credit cards, balance transfer offers, and low-APR products are some of the best in class and offer much convenience and many benefits for customers.
