U.S. News and World Report Ranks Credit Card Issuers

[Wednesday, December 16th, 2015]

The list of 2015’s best credit cards is out from U.S. News & World Report, and two travel rewards cards are at the top of the list.

United MileagePlus Club card took the prize for best airline credit card, and the Ritz-Carlton Rewards Credit Card swept the best hotel credit card category. Other categories included best cash back card and best low interest card.

U.S. News & World Report aims to provide folks with information that allows them to make smarter choices about credit cards. They estimate that 167 million adults have credit cards, and they strive to shed light on the types of credit cards that best serve consumers in different categories. Their rankings are based on features like digital tools, EMV chip availability, customer experiences based on complaints and reports to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), and how much value is offered by the card—measured by how much reward value cardholders keep after fees and interest are accounted for.

The top three airline credit cards were:
• United MileagePlus Club Card
• British Airways Visa Signature Card
• Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card

Best hotel rewards cards were as follows:
• Ritz Carlton Rewards Credit Card
• Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express
• Hilton HHonors Surpass Card from American Express

In the cash back category, we have:
• Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express
• Barclaycard CashForward World MasterCard
• Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express

And finally, the three best low interest credit cards were:
• Spectrum Rewards
• FlexPerks Reserve Visa Signature Card
• Barclaycard Ring MasterCard

The vice president of Money at U.S. News, Kim Heneghan, said that the company “developed the Best Credit Cards rankings to be a straightforward tool that allows consumers to find cards tailored to their specific needs and financial goals.” Heneghan stressed that finding the right credit card is important for folks wanting to improve their credit scores, get rewards, have purchase protection, and more.

Credit cards vary widely in their terms and conditions, as well as the rewards offered. They may have annual fees, promotional offers, interest rates from very low to quite high, and may or may not limit the rewards folks can earn. A big perk of many travel cards is the ability to board planes early, upgrade seating, get discounts on in-flight amenities, and access travel lounges in airports. Hotel cards give points worth free night and offer great perks for elite level travelers. Cash back cards often let folks redeem points for gift cards, statement credits, and more.
