People Still Prefer Paper: 93 Million Credit Card Statements Hit Mailboxes Each Month

[Tuesday, July 5th, 2016]

It might seem like paper is on the way out, with the availability of digital statements for many types of bank and credit card accounts. But there’s some bad news for the environment: people still seem to prefer to get paper statements.

At least, that would be the conclusion one might draw from the recent report that 93 million credit card holders are getting their statements in their mailboxes each month. Of those, 43 million say they actually prefer to get their statements on paper. And half of them would even be willing to pay extra to get their statement on paper.

The agency that conducted the survey expressed surprise at the results. “It’s surprising that in this day and age, many people are still receiving financial statements in the mail. I guess old habits die hard,” said an industry analyst. “The most popular reason to get statements in the mail is for record keeping purposes. It serves as a reminder that their bill has to be paid as well.”

He said people should be aware that getting statements in the mail ups their risk of identity theft, and said people should really be checking their accounts more than once a month in any case. “It’s a good idea to check those accounts online at least once a week.”

Online account information readily available

It’s easy to access account information online, and there are lots of tools online to help folks manage their accounts, as well. Spending analyzers, pay down planners, and the ability to transfer funds and make payments are all great reasons to take advantage of online account tools.

However, some people said they still prefer to pay their bills with a good old-fashioned envelope and check. They want to get a paper statement so they can send in the payment using the envelope provided, and enclose the payment stub as well.

There seemed to be some regional preference. According to the study, folks in the middle of the country were most likely to want to get a paper statement, far more than any other part of the country. Coastal residents seemed more ready to kiss their paper statements goodbye and move forward with the brave new digital world.

The survey, conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates, also showed that nearly 70% of Millennials would stop getting paper statements in the mail—if they got a $50 credit to do so. Only 52% of all other demographics said they could be bribed to let go of their paper statements.
