USAA Earns Top Customer Trust Ranking For Credit Cards

[Monday, May 2nd, 2016]

Each year, the Temkin Group releases their Temkin Trust Ratings, a survey of which brands Americans most trust. This year, for the second year in a row, financial institution USAA earned top rankings for banking and insurance.

The survey asks 10,000 U.S. consumers how they feel about 294 companies spanning across 20 different industries. USAA took the number one and two spots among all of these companies, across all industries, for their banking and insurance services. Credit unions, as a whole, took the third slot, while Publix, Mercedes-Benz, USAA credit cards, Chick-fil-A, Amazon.com, Residence Inn, Lexus, and BJ’s Wholesale Club rounded out the top ten.

USAA offers a wide range of banking and insurance products, as well as a full spectrum of credit card offerings, from rewards credit cards and elite credit cards, to credit cards for people with limited credit or bad credit. Folks with poor credit, or no credit history, sometimes have trouble finding a great credit card issued by a trusted company, so the fact that USAA earned such a high spot indicates a high level of not only trust, but satisfaction, among USAA credit card holders.

TV and Internet providers are least-trusted

The losers in the survey were television and Internet providers. Comcast got the lowest two spots, for its TV and Internet service. Charter Communications, another TV and Internet provider, also came out in the cellar, as did Time warner, for both Internet and TV, and Cox Communications. This was the second year in a row that Comcast got the lowest two spots.

Overall, the TV industry only earned a trust rating of 27%, and Internet service providers got a lowly 29%. The next lowest on the industry-wide rung of the trust ladder was health plan providers, with an average rating of 40%.

Supermarkets generally did well, with the industry overall earning the highest average Temkin Trust Rating, at 61%. Insurance companies, retailers, investment firms, and hotels all earned ratings of between 54% and 55%.

Some companies did much better than the industry average, rising above the rest. These included Motel 6, Super 8 and Days Inn, for hotels and motels, Chrysler, for automobiles, HSBC and Citibank, for banking and financial services, Spirit Airlines, for air travel, and Dollar Rent A Car, for car rentals.

But is customer trust decreasing? Compared to last year, 81% of the companies surveyed did worse this year, while 13% of companies got a better score.
