Please send my credit score.

[Friday, November 11th, 2011]

Beginning this year creditors are required to disclose your credit score if you are turned down for credit or granted less favourable rates and terms because of your score. This is after, but here’s what you can do before applying.

To know your rough credit score you can use our free online credit score estimator. There are also websites that offer scores for free but some of them aren’t the scores most creditors use.

If you want to get your actual credit scores before applying for credit, be ready to pay. It’s very important to get your accurate credit scores your creditors will look at and the credit score most commonly used by creditors is the FICO credit score. Your actual FICO scores are calculated and provided by the three nationwide credit bureaus – Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. You know that you personally do have the right to free annual access to your credit reports at AnnualCreditReport.com compiled by the three major credit reporting agencies but your FICO scores aren’t included for free in those reports. To get your scores you can consider signing up for credit monitoring services with the bureaus, although these are quite expensive. They offer trials, so you can sign up, see your credit score and then quit. You can also buy your credit scores at myFICO.com (except for your credit score from Experian). When you check your own credit score, it is considered a soft inquiry, so don’t worry about hurting your score.
